The Kel-Tec RFB
The recently released Kel-Tec RFB is no cheap wannabe. A bullpup with the capacity to be usable by both right and left handed shooters, it ejects the spent 7.62X51mm cartridges via a tube mounted above the barrel, in a forward direction. The spent brass is not forcefully ejected away form the weapon, but is slowly "bumped down the ejection tube by subsequent rounds or by simply dumping by use of gravity. This makes gathering used brass a cinch.

What is really intriguing is the bull pup design allows the use of a 34" barrel in the same length envelope of a conventional style 25-27" barrel battle rifle. I recently fired about 300 rounds from a RFB with an 18" barrel. The rifle was equipped with iron sights with a rear aperture and an expensive red dot type site. I was able to print a 1/2" group at 50 yards with the first 4 rounds. The perceived recoil was about the same as my venerable M14.

Initially I found the ergonomics difficult to adapt to, however after a bit of coaching from the rifles owner and some focusing it became quite "natural" feeling. The action operates a lot like a H&K 91 without the rough trigger. For those seeking light weight in the field, stick with your AR platforms. The cost factor is such that if you have to ask, you can't afford it. Hopefully this will change as the market demand is met by production.
